Language-based support is a powerful tool for building inclusive communities where everyone feels they belong. Inclusive language learning matters because it helps break down barriers, allowing newcomers to connect, contribute, and thrive.
ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) classes do more than teach vocabulary, they reduce isolation, support integration, and open doors to education, work, and community life.
Through Speak Street’s programs, refugees and migrants build confidence, make friends, and gain the skills to navigate daily life. For example, our community-led classes have helped parents engage with schools, individuals access services, and newcomers find their voice. When refugees are socially included, society benefits from their talents, resilience, and diverse perspectives. This creates stronger, more vibrant communities for all. See what people say about us.

Sara Bigatti from Union Chapel, part of our ELRN, explains how our workbooks help people adjust to their new surroundings and feel less isolated. One user visited all the places listed in the Learning English through Kings Cross book, improving his mental health and helping him to have the confidence and purpose to get out of the hotel.
Isabella, a cleaner in a large corporation, attended our in-house Speak Street class. She improved her English confidence, allowing her to progress in her career and ultimately take on a managerial role.

Benefits of Social Inclusion for Communities
Social inclusion strengthens communities by fostering connection, understanding, and mutual support. When everyone feels welcome and valued, local networks grow stronger and social cohesion flourishes. Inclusive communities experience greater wellbeing, with reduced isolation and improved mental health among newcomers and established residents. By engaging refugees and migrants, we unlock new ideas, talents, and perspectives that enrich community life.
At Speak Street, our inclusive partnerships with cultural institutions and local groups have led to real impact: from language exchanges that build friendships, to creative workshops that build English ability and confidence. Inclusion isn’t just the right thing to do, it makes communities more vibrant, resilient, and connected
Why Diversity and Inclusion Matter in Society
Being an inclusive organisation means embedding equity, representation, and belonging into every layer of our work, not just in policy, but in practice. It’s about ensuring diverse voices are not only heard but actively shape decisions, services, and outcomes. Representation matters to us because it leads to fairer, more responsive systems that reflect the communities they serve. Our board members come from a range of diverse backgrounds including having a lived experience of migration. advancing social justice to meeting equality and diversity commitments.
