Speak Street at Nandos!
On 23 January 2018, Speak Street commenced its first English class at the Nando’s outlet at King’s Cross. We were delighted to welcome 10 students at our first lesson – some are familiar faces from other classes, while others are discovering Speak Street for the first time. In the cosy booths of the restaurant with cups of coffee and tea courtesy of Nando’s, our volunteers and students practise reading and writing in small groups or pairs for an hour.
These Wednesday morning sessions have seen our students and volunteers practising telephone conversations and discussing and reading about current events, such as the Chinese Lunar New Year.
The students also attempt grammar and vocabulary exercises, with the guidance of experienced volunteers who tailor the teaching to the level of each student. The diverse backgrounds and ages of our students and volunteers always lend to fascinating conversations and lively interactions, and it is heartwarming to see the blossoming of friendships that traverse language barriers and racial and cultural differences. We are immensely grateful for the generosity of the people at Nando’s, for granting us a warm space and hot beverages to build an international community of eager learners and volunteers. We look forward to meeting our newfound regulars and to welcoming more new students each week at our 9:45 a.m. Wednesday morning classes at Nando’s!
